Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program

MESSAGE FROM THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Welcome to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at The University of Chicago.  We pride ourselves on developing future leaders and researchers in addition to developing excellent clinicians.

The program has recently undergone a significant restructuring.  We currently have 4 Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists who bring different areas of expertise.  Dr. Soo Mi Lee is a Robert Wood Johnson Scholar and is Triple Board trained in Pediatrics, Adult Psychiatry, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.  She is our newest addition.  She specializes in health care systems issues and in medically complex patients with psychiatric illness.  She practices primarily at La Rabida Children’s Hospital http://www.larabida.org/ and is developing innovative new systems of care for the State of Illinois.

Dr. Angela Smyth is a graduate of our program.  She has a special interest and expertise in eating disorders and is a member of our Eating Disorders Clinic http://psychiatry.uchicago.edu/clinical/clinics/edp/.  This is an internationally renowned program headed by Dr. Daniel le Grange, PhD.

Dr. Leoneen Woodard- Faust is a board-certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist who works in our outpatient clinics.  She brings a wealth of experience especially in dealing with the local community.

Dr. Sharon Hirsch is currently the Interim Section Chief and Training Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.  She received her general and research training at UCSD in adult and psychopharmacology and then moved to UCLA to complete her training in child psychiatry and research in child psychopathology.  Her research interests are in the area of mood and anxiety disorders and their overlap with impulsivity.  She has done research in the area of bipolar genetics with Dr. John Kelsoe and in psychopharmacology trials in ADHD.

We also have strong research programs in Neuropsychology headed by Dr. Scott Hunter, PhD and in Preschool Disruptive Behavior Disorders headed by Dr. Kate Keenan.  Dr. Khytam Dawood works with our department in her specialty clinic looking at cases of Gender Identitiy Disorder.

Our section works closely in tandem with the adult psychiatry department, providing a rich overlay of lectures and research opportunities.  We also work closely with the trauma team at La Rabida Children’s Hospital and with The University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital http://www.uchicagokidshospital.org/   Our clinics include specialized clinics in Eating Disorders, Neuropsychology, Urgent Care, Mood and Anxiety Disorders and Disruptive Behavior Disorders.

We are very excited about our new directions and proud of maintaining our strong research track record.  We hope that your journey into Child and Adolescent Psychiatry will lead you to The University of Chicago and the opportunities that we can offer you.

Sharon Hirsch, M.D.
