The
University of
Chicago Department of Psychiatry works to further the academic missions
of The University of Chicago and the Division of the Biological
Sciences -- i.e., to increase the scientific knowledge about
psychiatric conditions and to train mental health professionals. Our
clinical, teaching, and research programs exist to serve these goals.
We are committed to providing evidence-based clinical care and
state-of-the-art training for those who will collaborate with us in
serving these missions.
Our Department has outstanding ongoing investigations in several research areas,
including:
- molecular and clinical genetic research of bipolar illness,
schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease
- biology, genetics, neuroscience and treatment of impulsive
aggression and Intermittent Explosive Disorder
- clinical neuroscience of social and emotional information
processing in psychiatric disorder
- neuroimaging of anxiety, aggressive, and addictive disorders
- clinical phenomena and psychosocial treatment of eating disorders
(including obesity)
- human and animal behavioral psychopharmacology
- disruptive behavior disorders
We have multiple program areas of clinical
excellence, including:
- major depression and bipolar disorders
- anxiety disorders
- schizophrenia and psychotic disorders
- psychiatric disorders of late life
- intermittent explosive disorder and other impulse control
disorders
- eating disorders
- childhood and adolecent mood and developmental disorders
- cognitive disorders
- neurobehavioral disorders

Our department has areas of clinical excellence in the following
treatment modalities
- cognitive behavioral therapy
- psychodynamic psychotherapy
- electro convulsive therapy (ECT)
- familiy therapy
- group therapy
- dialectical behavioral
Our department provides comprehensive evaluations in the following:
- forensic psychiatry
- neuropsychological assessment
- consultation psychiatry
- inpatient psychiatry
- psycho-social assessment
Department faculty provide
training and
instruction to:
- Pritzker medical students (and elective students from other
medical schools)
- General Psychiatry residents
- Clinical psychology practicum students (externs), interns, and
postdoctoral fellows
- NIH supported postdoctoral training fellowship in Psychiatric
Genetics
